Divers and Marine Creatures is a new category in the Underwater Images Photo/Video Competition. Underwater Images is not-for-profit competition, chartered in the state of Ohio, with all proceeds going to marine conservation and education. The new category also aligns with a new beneficiary for the 2008 contest – The Diveheart Foundation. The deadline for entries in this competition which is now in its 11th year is March 1, 2008 and application forms can be obtained at www.uwimages.org.

In selecting Diveheart as one of the beneficiaries of the Underwater Images Competition, Director Roger Roth commented “This organization’s goals fit perfectly into the underwater images mission statement of: “Raising the awareness of the ecological importance of preserving marine habitats by education.”

The Diveheart Foundation is a non-profit national organization chartered to provide and support educational SCUBA diving and snorkeling experience programs for physically impaired children or adults in the hope of providing both physical and psychological therapeutic value to that person.

Other charities that Underwater Images supports include: Pro Peninsula, a conservation organization dedicated to empowering communities in Baja California, Mexico to protect and preserve their environment. Their main focus is on a Sea Turtle Conservation Network. Also, receiving proceeds from the competition is Mahonia Na Dari, non-profit group that has been working to protect Papua New Guinea's abundant biodiversity. Since 1998 Underwater Images has contributed more than $14,000 to each of these organizations.

Roth also announced that for the 11th consecutive year the Best of Show prize in the competition will be a trip for two to FeBrina, Walindi Plantation, and Aquatic Encounters. The FeBrina Liveaboard boat and Walindi Resort are based out of Kimbe Bay in Papua New Guinea.

First place category prize sponsors include: Archipelago Resorts & Fleet in Indonesia, Anthony's Key / Bahia Tours in the Bay Islands of Honduras, Bilikiki Cruises Ltd. in the Solomon Islands, DiveTech and Cobalt Coast Resort of Grand Cayman, and Aqua Lung America.

The other categories of the photo competition are: "Conservation", "Majestic", "Togetherness", "Macro (Open& Novice)", "Wide Angle (Open & Novice)", and a "video" category. For a more complete list of prizes as well as further details of the competition visit www.uwimage.org.
